What Do I Wear?

Your outfits are very important. Good clothing is an essential part of a successful portrait session.

Wear shoes that match your outfit. We will do some poses that are full length so be sure your shoes and stockings are appropriate. We recommend dark stockings.
Please come dressed in one of your outfits it will allow us to get started faster.
Girls--Dresses, formals and lace for the more traditional look. If you like an outfit it is probably because it looks good on you so be sure to bring it.
Guys--for the more traditional portraits, a suit or sports coat with tie is good. Medium to dark colored sweaters photograph well.

Wear Solid Colors
Solid colors are the best choice for a portrait. The clothes should not be the first thing you see in a portrait. Wearing solid colors will allow for a composition that displays the person in the portrait and not the clothes they are wearing.

Good Choice

good for photography

What About My Hair, Makeup and Glasses?

HAIR: Try to have your hair cut and/or permed at least one week before your session to give it a chance to "fill in" a little. Don’t try a drastically new hairstyle--chances are you won’t feel that it expresses the real you.
MAKEUP: Here’s a quick hint that will greatly enhance your portrait, just before your session stand about two feet in front of the mirror. Dab a small amount of cover-up makeup on any noticeable blemishes. That’s it, if there gone in the mirror they’ll be gone in your photographs.
GLASSES: If you wear glasses most of the time, you’ll want to wear them in your portrait. To eliminate glare and reflections, call your optician and arrange to either borrow a pair of empty frames like yours or have the lenses removed from your own frames. Most opticians will do this for free (make sure to give them plenty of notice, though). This totally eliminates glass glare and distortions and is the most important way to improve your portraits if you wear glasses. If you choose to wear your glasses the way they are, keep in mind that if you want the reflections removed they will be done at your expense.

Avoid Sleeveless Outfits
Sleeveless outfits make your arms look larger and heavier than they really are.
We recommend long sleeves. If you want a "summer" look than a short sleeve is better.

Great summer time outfit

A nice summer dress,
just not ideal for portraits

How can I look more tan?

You can LOOK tan without having to BE tan. Wear a white or off white outfit. Light colors make your skin appear darker in your portraits. DON’T over do it in the sun or tanning beds just before your session --it’s almost impossible to remove a peeling nose or a bright red sunburn. The only way to correct such things is with Digital retouching which can often be very expensive.

Avoid Patterns
Patterns in clothing are very distracting and take the attention off of the people in the portraits and puts the attention on the clothes that they are wearing.

example of how to dress

The patterns above can
be very distracting
